Tendulkar gives Dhoni's captaincy full marks

Instrumental in Mahendra Singh Dhoni's [ Images ] elevation to captaincy of the Indian cricket team, Sachin Tendulkar [ Images ] says India's rich success under the stewardship of the star stumper from Jharkhand vindicated his faith in him. After Rahul Dravid [ Images ] decided to step down from the captain's job soon after India's England [ Images ] tour last year, Tendulkar suggested Dhoni's name to the then Board of Control for Cricket in India president, Sharad Pawar [ Images ]. Under Dhoni, India won, among others, the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa [ Images ], tri-series in Australia , Test series against Australia [ Images ] at home before recording their first ODI series win in New Zealand and first Test series there in 41 years. Refusing to disclose much about his suggestion to Pawar to appoint Dhoni captain, Tendulkar said, "I spoke to the BCCI president but I would not want to discuss everything publicly. The veg vs non-veg health debate

The perpetual debate that is waged about the inadequacies of a vegetarian diet versus the hazards of a non-vegetarian diet is both accurate and wrong on a number of levels and if one really looks at both groups of people and their eating habits, there is room for healthy living in both. Confused? As human beings, we are creatures of comfort, habit and stubbornness. People take ill from time to time by consuming an inadequate diet, overeating or from leading sedentary lives. Did you notice the missing key words in the sentence above? There is no mention of the 'vegetarian' or 'non-vegetarian' -- it is a rule that applies to both categories. It's not the cultural or religious beliefs we hold, but the actual diet and the food we consume that is pulling the rug out from under our feet. The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that death from diabetes and heart disease alone costs India about $210 billion every year, and it is expected to increase to $335 billion i

What do women want in their men?

Physical attributes? Pleasant personality? Sense of humour? Money? Intelligence? Or can a pleasant and respectable personality also help cast a good impression and get your heartthrob to take note of you? 1. Intelligence and honesty Women rate trust and intelligence way on top in their list of likes in their men. Aksa, a painter living in Mumbai bubbles over with enthusiasm as she says, "Mental intercourse is a solid turn-on for me. That, of course, happens only with brilliant men. Dumb men turn me off. They may be hot-looking and smart, but if they can't strike a intelligent conversation and are not honest about what they are, I get disinterested in them instantly." Amita, a professional with a leading MNC in Delhi, seconds this opinion: "If I realise a guy is lying to me for some petty reason, it completely puts me off. I find it very difficult to trust him or mentally connect with him again." 2. Confident and substance-free Men who are not confident, filled w

The secret of unconditional love unravelled

The reason why you immeasurably care for a person without any thought of reward is one of science's biggest mysteries. Now, researchers at Montreal University claim that they have unravelled the secret behind unconditional love. The research team, led by Professor Mario Beauregard of Montreal University's centre for research into neurophysiology and cognition, found that the emotion emerges from a complex interplay between seven separate areas of the brain. Such brain activity has only limited overlap with the cerebral impulses seen in romantic or sexual love, suggesting it should be seen as an entirely separate emotion. "Unconditional love, extended to others without exception, is considered to be one of the highest expressions of spirituality. However, nothing has been known regarding its neural underpinnings until now," The Times quoted Mario, as saying. To reach the conclusion, the volunteers were recruited on the basis that they had a proven ability to feel stron

A Tradtional Vishu Kanni Setting

The festival is marked with offerings to the divine called Vishukanni. The offerings consists of a ritual arrangement in the puja room of auspicious articles like rice, linen, cucumber, betel leaves, matal mirror, holy text and coins in a bell metal vessel called uruli. A lighted bell metal lamp called nilavilakku is also placed alongside. This arrangement is completed by the women of the house during the previous night. On the day of Vishu, it’s a custom to wake up at dawn and go to the puja room with the eyes closed so that the first thing a person sees is the Vushukanni. The Vishukanni is later distributed among the poor.People wear new clothes for the occasion and the elders in the family distribute tokens of money to the children, servants and tenants. These tokens are called Vishukkaineetam and are usually in the form of coins. People carry out this custom believing that in this way, their children would be blessed with prosperity in the future. Vishu is considered to be a day of

Vishu

Vishu ( Malayalam : à´µിà´·ു ) is a festival held in the state of Kerala in South India (and malayali's and Palakkad tamils in adjoining areas of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu ). Similar festivals are celebrated in Punjab and Assam , in India , around the first day in the Malayalam Month of Medam (April – May). Vishu follows the sidereal vernal equinox and generally falls on April 14 of the Gregorian year. This occasion signifies the Sun's transit to the zodiac - Mesha Raasi (first zodiac sign) as per Indian astrological calculations. Vishu is also considered as the harvest festival of Kerala and thus the importance of this day to all Malayalees . In Assam this day is called Bihu , in Punjab Baisakhi (originally Vaishakhi) and in Tamil Nadu Tamil Puthandu or Vishu punyakalam .The word "Vishu" in Sanskrit means "equal". Therefore Vishu is more probably denoting one of the equinox days. Although Vishu (first of Medam ) is the astronomical new year day of

No Third Front constituent will support Cong, BJP: Naidu

Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu [ Images ], a key member of the Third Front, on Sunday ruled out any of the constituents of the 10-party combine supporting either the Bharatiya Janata Party [ Images ] or the Congress in forming a government at the Centre after the Lok Sabha elections. The 58-year-old former Andhra Pradesh chief minster also said that he was not in the race for prime ministership. Naidu said the political landscape in the country is significantly changing and the non-Congress and non-BJP coalition has acquired its own momentum to be able to form government on its own as the country is in for "tripolar polity". "During the last four Lok Sabha elections, the Congress and BJP have been gaining or loosing only at the cost of each other which goes to prove that they have hit the plateau and they can only come down which is already happening," Naidu told PTI in an interview. "I see no reason for our friends to go with this party or that p

Congress reduced to 'Fourth Front' in some states: BJP

With the Patali Makkal Katchi breaking its ties with the United Progressive Alliance, the Bharatiya Janata Party [ Images ] on Thursday took pot-shots at the Congress-led alliance saying this showed the "delivery mechanism of the Congress was failing" and it had been reduced to the "Fourth Front" in several states. "With a crucial ally like the PMK gone in Tamil Nadu, the delivery mechanism of the Congress seems to be failing. Now Congress plus UPA comes to very little as it has alliances only in Maharashtra and West Bengal," BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley [ Images ] told PTI. "In the 134 seats of Uttar Pradesh [ Images ], Bihar and Jharkhand, the Congress has actually become the Fourth Front," he said, adding, "The front runners are now the underdogs." BJP's chief strategist said Sharad Pawar's [ Images ] Nationalist Congress Party and Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress may have an alliance with the Congress "bu

Love Your Enemies

27"I say to you people that are listening to me, love your enemies. Do good to those people that hate you. 28Ask God to bless those people that say bad things to you. Pray for those people that are mean to you. 29If a person hits you on the side of your face, let him hit the other side too. If a person takes your coat, don't stop him from taking your shirt too. 30Give to every person that asks you. When a person takes something that is yours, don't ask for it back. 31Do for other people what you want them to do for you. 32If you love only those people that love you, should you get some special praise for doing that? No! Even sinners love the people that love them! 33If you do good only to those people that do good to you, should you get some special praise for doing that? No! Even sinners do that! 34If you loan things to people, always hoping to get something back, should you get some special praise for that? No! Even sinners lend to other sinners so that they can get back

Coffee is gym fixer

SINKING a cup of coffee before going to the gym helps to reduce pain during exercise, it was claimed yesterday. Its caffeine blocks receptors that make the brain aware of aching muscles, said health expert Prof Robert Motl. He made the link after drinking coffee before competing in cycle races. Prof Motl, of Illinois, hopes it will encourage reluctant gym visitors to stick with exercising.

How did the April Fool's Day tradition begin, and what are the best tricks?

Why are we asking this now? Because it's that day again: after another boring 364 days of sober honesty all round, the beloved annual festival of practical jokery is upon us once more. If you're reading this before midday, it's your one chance in the year to pull the wool over somebody's eyes with impunity. So why are the rules different on 1 April? The stories surrounding the origin of April Fool's Day are widely various and it's hard to be certain about the truth – especially when you consider that people feel they have carte blanche to make things up when it comes to this subject. Still, whether it's true or not, one popular tale dates the tradition to 1564, when France formally changed its calendar to the modern Gregorian version, and thereby moved the celebration of the New Year from the last week of March to 1 January. In this version of events, those who continued to celebrate the end of New Year's Week on 1 April were derided as fools – or, as th

Now, no charges for using any ATM

On April 1 onwards you need not shell out any extra money to use ATM of any bank , thanks to a directive by the Reserve Bank.Providing the much-needed relief to the common man, banks have been asked by the regulator not to charge any fee for cash withdrawals using ATM and debit cards issued by other banks from April 1 onwards. However, banks can still charge extra for services such as cash withdrawal with the use of credit cards and at ATMs located outside India.Under these circumstances also, some banks plan to expand their ATM network.Oriental Bank of Commerce is planning to increase its ATM base and will open 60 new ATMs across the country to facilitate smooth cash withdrawal. "We are planning to open 60 more ATMs to facilitate cash withdrawal," OBC Executive Director S C Sinha said. When asked about the strategy the largest private sector lender ICICI will adopt to comply with the regulation, a bank's spokesperson said, "We will abide by the RBI directions".
