Safety first inside Metro tunnel

In eight minutes flat, as Namma Metro’s east-west corridor train completes that 4.8km stretch, commuters might harbour a nagging thought: what if the train stops suddenly inside the tunnel. Is it safe enough? To banish that thought, a team from Deccan Herald went underground checking out all the safety measures in place. Tunnel-walking from the Cubbon Park station till the Vidhana Soudha stop 400 metres away, the team noticed a walkway at a three-metre elevation from the track. Attached to the tunnel wall on one side, it ran the full distance between the stations. The walkway had a clear purpose: quick evacuation. But what about the air? The Metro engineers were sure, the air-conditioning within the coaches would suffice to keep everyone inside comfortable for 20 to 30 minutes. Once the commuters get onto the walkway, the Tunnel Ventilation System (TVS) will do the trick. Simply put, the TVS is about blowing air into the tunnel from one station and taking it out from the next o

New Provident Fund Rules creates Riot in Bengaluru

In March, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley proposed new rules to Provident Fund . Under the plan, people could withdraw only half their provident fund before retirement and would have to wait till they were 58 to access the employer's share of the deposit. Thousands of garment workers in Bengaluru clashed with the police and set buses and cars on fire today, angry with the government over a controversial new rule for provident funds, which has now been withdrawn. Workers threw stones at a police station and burnt several police vehicles as the protests - not led by any union - spiraled out of control. At least three public buses were set on fire, said the police. The protesters also blocked traffic on the highway, causing five-hour jams in the IT city. Policemen fired in the air and used tear gas and batons to control mobs Bengaluru police commissioner NS Megharikh told NDTV that the protests were brought under control by afternoon and reports that a police officer had opene

Madness in the name of Almighty

The Firework tragedy in Kollam remind us all about the madness with which various trust's in name of God are operated . It is not just the case of Temple but also for festivals of Church , Muslim Festival and even the political party functions . In name of God they break rule and regulation and care little  about the public even of there own kids or relatives . Huge Sounds are played 24x7 during these festival . Nobody care about the sound Pollution or Supreme Court Orders or Even does not care for the old people , Kids & Students in their own house who are deeply disturbed by huge sound . I have personally experience for it . When you request to reduce or shift something the potential Communal Card Comes into play. They threaten your family , physically assault you , make foul comments in public and even threaten to kill . the organizer take such issue as matter of pride to show that they are powerful & big. Even Govt Administration does not care to implement the Cou

Fireworks show in Kerala goes awry, kills 107 , Injured 350 .

In the worst-ever pyrotechnics tragedy to strike Kerala, 110 persons were killed and close to 400 injured, many of them grievously, on Sunday. Disaster struck the crowded precincts of the Puttingal Devi Temple at Paravur, south of Kollam, around 3.30 a.m. when an entire dump of fire crackers meant to be burst to mark the conclusion of the Meena-Bharani festival exploded, killing over 40 persons instantly, maiming many more and causing extensive damage to nearby buildings. The State government has announced a judicial inquiry and a Crime Branch investigation into the disaster. Eyewitnesses said disaster struck when a cracker meant to explode in the air fell to the ground, sending sparks flying in all directions. The sparks reached the storehouse, igniting fireworks stored there. The explosion that followed brought down a building and caused damage to several structures in the vicinity. The explosion was followed by power disruption, which left the crowd clueless about the magn

Why Aeroplane Window Panes Have Tiny Holes On Them

For anyone who has ever wondered why aeroplanes windows have a small hole in them, be reassured: it's an important safety feature to stop the cabin from depressurising. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) told Tech Insider the hole is used to regulate air pressure. As the plane gains altitude, the air pressure outside drops compared to the regulated air pressure inside the cabin. The difference in air pressure places physical stress on the plane's windows, which consist of three panes of glass. A small air gap sits between the middle and outer panes of glass. The hole in the middle pane, officially called a "breather" or "bleed" hole, balances the pressure between the cabin and air gap. This ensures the outer pane takes the pressure, while the middle pane acts as a fail-safe in the unlikely event the outer pane fails. The bleed hole also serves another function, releasing moisture from the air gap to prevent windows from fogging up or frosting ove

Holes In The Sun Threaten To Throw Birds, GPS Off Course

Birds flying north for the spring and humans relying on global positioning satellites to navigate could get a little lost this weekend. Three coronal holes spread across the sun are pointing at the Earth. As a result, a minor geomagnetic storm alert has been issued for Saturday by the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado, and the Space Weather Operations Centre of the U.K. Met Office in Exeter. "Early on Day 3 (2nd April), a high-speed stream from coronal hole 67 is expected to reach Earth," said the Met Office. Forecasters in the U.S. and Britain predict this could confuse migrating birds and other animals, cause minor problems with satellites and make an aurora visible as far south as Maine and Michigan. The storms could rise to G2 level on a five-step scale, which would mean the Northern Lights might be seen in New York and some electrical transformers could be damaged. Viewed through X-ray telescopes, coronal holes can appear to be vast

The Kolkata Flyover Disaster

IVRCL Group - the company in charge of building the flyover in Kolkata which collapsed on Thursday causing the deaths of 24 people - has claimed the disaster was an "Act of God". The more mundane reasons for the collapse may only emerge after an enquiry. But a scrutiny of IVRCL's books suggest that much before the collapse, the company has been in the grip of financial turmoil, partly caused by overextending itself. In the same year it bagged the Kollkata flyover project - 2009 - the Hyderabad-based company also bagged 31 infrastructure projects across India. These ranged from Kosi Canal System in Bihar to reconstruction of Tsunami affected bridge for Highways Department, Chennai, Tamil Nadu The scorching growth was matched by high debt, almost tripling from Rs. 1,661 crores in 2010 to Rs. 4,055 crores as of March 2015. As of 2015, its losses stood at Rs. 672 crore. In December last year, the consortium of banks that have lent to IVRCL took over the reins of the c

From A Delivery Boy To An Auto-Driver And Now A Pilot

Nagpur's Shrikant Pantawane, an auto-driver and son of a security guard, started working early in life as a delivery boy to support his family's dwindling finances. Later he took to driving an auto to make ends meet. At a very young age Shrikant was burdened with responsibilities and he would balance both his job and studies to support his family. But hardships, obstacles and financial struggles never disheartened him from pursuing his dreams Shrikant still sits behind a three-wheeled vehicle, but now its not his auto-rikshaw, but an aircraft! With hardwork, determination and a pinch of luck, Shrikant achieved what he had only dreamt of as a child. Once when Shrikant had gone to the airport to deliver a parcel, during a conversation with cadets he learnt that one could also become a pilot even without being inducted in the Indian Air Force. His conversation with a tea-seller outside the airport apprised him of a pilot scholarship program by the DGCA. There was no stopping f
