Malaysian GP 2013

Sebastian Vettel blatantly ignored team orders and fought his way past Red Bull teammate Mark Webber to win the Malaysian Grand Prix. A livid Webber finished second. Mercedes teammates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, who were also under team orders, but in their case they adhered to them, took third and fourth places. It was a strange podium ceremony followed by a tense press conference with a contrite Vettel, a furious Webber and a disconsolate Hamilton all despondent with the way the race had ended. "As you can see I'm not entirely happy," he said after scoring the 27th F1 victory of his career. "I think I did a big mistake today. I think we should have stayed in the positions that we were. I didn't ignore it on purpose but I messed up in that situation and obviously took the lead which, I can see now he's upset, but yeah, I want to be honest at least and stick to the truth and apologize. I know that it doesn't really help his feelings right now but ...

Australian Grand Prix 2013

Kimi Raikkonen wins opener from Fernando Alonso as Sebastian Vettel takes third Kimi Raikkonen has made taciturnity a fine art, but even the famously repressed Finn managed a few fist-pumps for the Melbourne crowd as he celebrated an extraordinary victory in the Australian Grand Prix that sent Lotus into raptures and shredded the pre-season form-book. Many had wondered aloud how fast the 2007 world champion would be upon returning from his two-year sabbatical in a rally car, but Raikkonen scattered all doubts with a consummate drive that cemented himself and Lotus as genuine championship contenders this season. He almost forced a smile atop the podium, toasting his triumph by six seconds over Ferrari's Fernando Alonso. Sebastian Vettel, who had appeared a runaway favourite to win after sealing his 36th career pole in a Red Bull front-row lock-out, finished third, while Lewis Hamilton had to be content with fifth after Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg went out with electronic failur...

Blow Diffuser in F1 car

What is a blown diffuser? On road cars, the engine exhaust exits are normally located at the rear of the car. On a Formula One car they are deliberately located in front of the rear wheels so that the hot, fast flowing exhaust gases can be channelled towards the car’s rear diffuser. This increases airflow through the diffuser and in turn increases the amount of downforce the diffuser produces. This is perfectly legal under current F1 regulations. What is an off-throttle blown diffuser? Normally the engine will only produce exhaust gases when the driver is on the throttle. This means when the driver lifts off, the blown diffuser is suddenly robbed of the additional airflow. To get around this, some teams have modified their engine mapping so that when the driver lifts off, although fuel supply and ignition are cut, airflow through the exhaust - and hence to the diffuser -continues. This technique has become known as ‘cold blowing’ - the exhaust is still ‘blowing’ into the diffuser, but ...

Injuries force Schumacher to call off F1 comeback

The seven-time world champion was to fill in for injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa and hoped to return at the European Grand Prix in Valencia, Spain, later this month. However, Schumacher said on his Web site he informed top Ferrari officials on Monday evening that "unfortunately I'm not able to step in for Felipe." Schumacher, 40, retired at the end of the 2006 season. Since then, he has raced occasionally in a motorcycling series but was injured in a crash in February. "The consequences of the injuries caused by the bike accident in February, fractures in the area of head and neck, unfortunately have turned out to be still too severe," Schumacher said. "That is why my neck cannot stand the extreme stresses caused by Formula One yet." "I really tried everything to make that temporary comeback possible. However, much to my regret it didn't work out," he added. "Unfortunately we did not manage to get a grip on the pain in the neck...

ANOTHER TEST FOR SCHUMACHER

Michael Schumacher has been given another two days of track testing before suiting up for the European Grand Prix in Valencia. Schumacher, who has been banned from testing one of the more recent models of Ferrari's cars by the objection of Williams and both Red Bull teams, will use an older 1007 version for a couple of days to see if his neck can hold out as he tries to adapt his body to the rigours of racing. "It is currently planned that Michael will drive Tuesday and Wednesday at Mugello," Schumacher's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm told Bild, "He can again use the 2007 car belonging to [Ferrari's] F1 Clienti, albeit on his own initiative and at his own expense." Kehm added that the test would be 'a closed' one as the German racing legend makes his final preparations to replace Felipe Massa in the line-up for Ferrari in Spain. Schumi will also be unveiling new Schuberth headgear, a helmet that has implemented the improvements to combat a repeat of in...

Schumi back in the groove

Michael Schumacher has wasted no time in preparing for his Formula One comeback - getting back behind the wheel in Italy. Just two days after confirming he would replace the injured Felipe Massa at the European Grand Prix in Valencia on August 23, the 40-year-old was on Friday back behind the wheel of a 2007-spec car. With in-season testing banned, Schumacher is not allowed to drive the current Ferrari, but can run an older model, and will do so on the team's test track at Mugello. The seven-times world champion also worked on the simulator on Thursday, in particular to get a feel for the current steering wheel and its plethora of buttons.] "I was in Maranello to check the functionality of the steering wheel at the static simulator," confirmed Schumacher. "Of course, I also took the opportunity to again discuss with the engineers how to proceed further. "There is this test ban in Formula One, therefore I contacted some of the guys from F1 Clienti (the technician...
