Relevance of Governors: Is it an opportune time to get rid of the post ?

The resignation of two Governors this week and more likely to follow, and the defiant stance of a few of them against the request of the ruling party to step down, has brought back the role and functioning of governors in focus. Few will dispute that despite Supreme Court strictures and strict guidelines on the role of governors, the august office has been abused and trampled on, on many occasions by the ruling parties since Independence. In recent years both the Congress and the BJP have not had an unblemished record in matters relating to Governors - be it their appointment or the manner in which they have been used to serve their partisan interests. There are also fundamental questions long unanswered. Do we need the office of the Governor at all? The office is a vestige of the Raj and an anachronism. A white elephant of avoidable pomp and glory with little seeming purpose except used often to offer sinecures to rehabilitate troublesome or useless politicians within the party or

Chennai halts traffic to save life

When it's more common to read reports of people losing their lives because of their inability to reach the hospital on time because of VIP traffic restrictions, here is a heart-warming story of traffic coming to a halt in Chennai to save the life of an ordinary patient. On Monday, life in the heart of Chennai came to a halt on Monday to save a life. In a textbook example of precise coordination between surgeons of two hospitals and the city traffic police, a medical team transported a heart from Government General Hospital to Fortis Malar Hospitals in Adyar, about 12km away, in less than 14 minutes by creating a "green corridor" - that is, red-light free access. "As soon as the heart was brought, the transplant began. By 10.15pm, the heart was beating in the patient's chest," said Dr Suresh Rao, chief anesthetist at Fortis Malar. For those unfamiliar with Chennai, it's important to know that the road connecting the two hospitals is a key arterial ro

Leading sports entertainment brand EA Sports have predicted that Germany will win the World Cup this summer in Brazil. The 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil game simulated each of the 32 countries fixtures to see how they would fare during the tournament - which is now just five days away from the kick off. And it was Joachim Low's men who triumphed, becoming the first European nation to win in South America, defeating host nation Brazil 2-1 in the final. The prediction also saw England progressing out of the group of death, before beating Colombia in the Round of 16 on penalties. After beating the 2010 winners, Spain in a shootout in the last four, Germany went on to claim their fourth World Cup trophy. EA points out that four years ago, the company "accurately predicted that Spain would prevail as the tournament champions." At that time, Spain was considered a hot favorite to win the World Cup.
