Box office Report - First Half 2015
The first half report of Malayalam cinema's business at the box office in the first half of 2015 goes steady. According to trade reports, Malayalam cinema has done fairly well at the box office as compared to other South Indian film industries in terms of success rate.
According to trade analysts, out of 63 releases in Malayalam cinema, movies like Mili, Picket 43, Fireman, 100 Days of Love, Oru Vadakkan Selfie, Ennum Eppozhum, Bhaskar the Rascal and Chandrettan Evideya stood out in terms of performances. But, it is the success of Nivin Pauly starrer Premam that is the highlight of the year.
"The film continues to run to packed houses in its fourth week across the country. It has already raked in over Rs 30 crore at the ticket window. It's turning out to be the highest grossing film in the history of the Malayalam industry," distributor Arvind Nambiar told IANS.
Along with the successes, some movies also ended up having huge demand in other languages. The other language copyrights of Mammootty's Bhaskar The Rascal and Nivin Pauly's Oru Vadakkan Selfie sold for a good amount.
"Some of these hits are already being remade in other languages. 'Oru Vadakkan Selfie', for instance, which is being remade in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Marathi and Bengali, earned nearly Rs 20 crore from theatricals alone. It's phenomenal," added Nambiar. Meanwhile, this year also saw some of the most anticipated movies failing terribly at the box office.
Mohanlal's Lailaa O Lailaa and Fahadh Faasil's Mariyam Mukku had created massive buzz long before its release, but these films failed to impress, and bombed at the box office.
While looking at the Tamil industry, of the record 107 Tamil releases, only 10 turned out to be hits by reaping profits for their producers.
While Kanchana 2 along with its Telugu dubbed version Ganga grossed over Rs 100 crore worldwide on an investment of Rs 18 crore, Kaaka Muttai, which is still running in select cinemas, has raked in over Rs 15 crore.
Other successful ventures include Anegan, Kaaki Sattai, I, O Kadhal Kanmani, 36 Vayadhinile and Demonte Colony.
A big disappoint was Kamal Haasan- starrer Uttama Villain and Suriya's Massu.
