Blog 975 CPI Leader A B Bardhan Passed away


Senior Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Ardhendu Bhushan Bardhan died on Saturday evening. He was 92.
.
Mr Bardhan was undergoing treatment at a hospital in New Delhi following paralytic stroke last month, and later became "very critical".

Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Janata Dal (United) chief Sharad Yadav had visited the communist leader while he was on life support in the hospital. Mr Bardhan has been a leading figure of the trade union movement and Left politics in Maharashtra and a key figure in fostering relations between the Congress-led UPA and the Left in the early 2000s..

He had won as an Independent candidate in Maharashtra Assembly polls in 1957..

He later rose to become the General Secretary and then President of All India Trade Union Congress, the oldest trade union in India. Mr Bardhan had moved to Delhi politics in the 1990s and became the Deputy General Secretary of CPI.

He succeeded Indrajit Gupta as the General Secretary of the party in 1996. .
