The people of Kerala, along with some other States, will vote on 16thApril 2009 to elect their representatives to the Indian Parliament. Theseelections are important because they will determine the policy orientationof the Central Government, especially at a time when the entire world istrying to grapple with the biggest capitalist crisis of our times.Communalism, religious extremism and terrorism also pose grave threats topeace and democracy, not only in India but the entire South Asian region.Neither the Congress, which has presided over sharply increasingsocio-economic inequalities in the country over the past five years, northe BJP which thrives on the politics of hatred and divisiveness, has thevision or the capacity to provide a new direction to Indian politics. Inthis context, the initiative taken by the CPI (M) and other Left Partiesto work for a secular alternative at the Centre, which will adoptpro-people policies, strengthen federalism and pursue an independentforeign policy, is a welcome initiative. We appeal to the people ofKerala, who are always sensitive to national concerns and supportprogressive causes, to vote for the LDF candidates and ensure their victory.
