When a idea to Generate positive PR went Lay wire after IITian accept the 6 crore offer

In a stunning development, India’s IT services giant, Infosys, has surpassed the likes of Facebook by making a mammoth Rs 6 crore annual pay package offer to an IIT-Kharagpur Computer Science student, Rakesh Kapur, during campus recruitment. However, the idea was apparently a marketing gimmick gone wrong – the Infy HR team was confident that all IITians would reject the offer anyway but the news would make headlines on both the mainstream and the social media, thereby generating positive PR for the beleaguered IT services giant. But in a cruel twist, IITian Rakesh Kapur, who was spell-bound by the package, gleefully accepted the offer and even agreed to go through the initial months of prison-styled training thereby dashing the plan hatched by the company’s HR division.
Now, the company is in utter shock. For one, it has blown its entire recruitment budget for the year on acquiring just one student. While he is undoubtedly talented and smart, can he do the equivalent of 100 freshers from other colleges? The Hiring and Talent Acquisition team has been summoned to explain the management and the Board the logic behind this move.
“We never thought they’d accept it and hence offered such a huge remuneration”, said a shocked Ranjan Kumar, University Talent Acquisition Specialist at Infosys who devised the strategy of offering insanely huge offers to IIT students (who would anyway reject it) to boost up the company’s image and profile among students from top Indian institutions.
Rakesh Kapur, who wanted to be an entrepreneur since birth and wished he had a couple of offers from Facebook and Twitter to reject, is excited after learning that his parents are very happy about their son getting an offer from a “very big” and a “well-known” company. Shantha Kapur, the student’s mother, says she’s thankful to God for blessing her son with an offer from Infy while all of her relatives’ children are employed in some unheard of firms like Goldman Sachs and such.
