FREE TRADE AGREEMENT WITH ASEAN COUNTRIES
India has recently signed an agreement with the ASEAN countries for free trade. Free trdae means no import tax will be applicable any more. Is this treaty a good or bad. How is it going to affect the Agricultural products of Indian Farmers. Most of countries in ASEAN are small countries. but they have an efficent cost effective mechanism for various agriculture than india. the list of item that are not within the list of ASEAn trade agreement and those within the agreement will know once the final document is made public.
How far it is going to affect the farmers. Consider Kerala state with maximum production of Rubber , coconut oil, spice items like cardomon, pepper,coffee, Tea.Even without the trade agreement for those item the price the farmer is getting is less. I used to sell the coconut for Rs 5 which is not a good price. If the proposed free trade with low import duty for cooking oil then cooking oil from other countries will enter our country and there will be no demand for own coconut as well as coconut oil. similiar is case for pepper , Coffee, tea which are badly hit by the reccesion and other environmental factor.
But while think other area like texilte it is going to benefit our country. It is opening upon new market for our product. Is that more fruitful.. Time will say the answer. I think the Agreement is going to increase no of Farmer Suicides in India.
